2011 – 2015 Mega Grant

On 22nd of September 2011 we have been awarded a ‘mega grant’ – a £3mln (150mln rubles) grant from the Government of the Russian Federation (11.G34.31.0043; PI – Prof Yulia Kovas) to set up a Laboratory for Cognitive Investigations and Behavioural Genetics at Tomsk State University.

The laboratory will study individual differences in cognitive development, focusing on STEM-related abilities. Individual differences enable societies to adapt to new environments, to survive in the face of many challenges, and to succeed in the face of great changes. Capitalising on this variation will lead to greater adaptability and better life for all people through improvements in social organizations, innovative solutions for the problems facing us. In order to capitalise on the existing variation, we need to first understand its nature. Why do people differ in their ability to learn, in their memory capacities, or in their motivation? These differences develop through complex interactions between genes and environments. Our aim is to provide new insights into the mechanisms of these interactions and to apply this new understanding to optimising education to each individual.

A major part of this grant will be the establishment of the Russian School Twin Registry – recruiting twins from over 54,000 schools in Russia. This unique resource, in combination with the existing Twin’s Early Development Study in the UK, will lead to the major new insights into the origins of individual differences in learning. We will also conduct molecular genetic and cross-cultural investigations of cognitive abilities to provide new insights into the mechanisms of cognitive development. We hope that this exciting new research will lead to major breakthroughs in education, in particular – in the STEM fields.
